How to clean and sterilise the Philips Avent breast pump

Published on 14 February 2024

It is important to clean your Philips Avent Electric Breast Pump before the first use and afterwards regularly. Find out how to maintain good breast pump hygiene below.

Note: There is no need to sterilise the silicone tubes and caps because they do not come in contact with milk. Please wipe clean the motor unit and adapter with a soft, damp cloth.

Disassemble

First disassemble the breast pump before cleaning

1.     Unscrew the bottle from the pump body

2.     Unplug the power adapter

3.     Remove the white valve, cushion and silicone diaphragm from the pump body

Note: Be careful with the white valve when you remove and clean it. If it gets damaged, your breast pump will not function properly. To remove the white valve, gently pull at the ribbed tab on the side of the valve.

Clean with hot water and washing-up liquid or in the dishwasher

  • Clean all parts (except motor unit, adapter, silicone tubes and caps) in hot water with some mild washing-up liquid
  • Rinse all the parts thoroughly.
  • You can also clean the parts in the dishwasher (on the top rack only).
  • Allow all parts to dry on a clean surface.

Expert tip: To clean the valve, rub it gently between your fingers in warm water with some washing-up liquid. Do not insert objects into the valve, as this may cause damage

Sterilise

  • Sterilise all parts (except motor and adapter silicone tubes and caps) by boiling them for 5 minutes.
  • Make sure to allow for a cool-down period after the sterilising cycle has ended: the breast pump can be too hot to touch immediately after sterilising.
  • Allow all parts to dry on a clean surface.
