What is Gingivitis and how to Treat It

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a common issue a lot of people face. It’s a mild form of gum disease and it can have drastically negative effects on your life.

What are the common gingivitis symptoms?

The most noticeable gingivitis symptoms are puffy gums, gums that are tender to the touch, and even bleeding gums. The tender and painful nature of gingivitis-affected gums can make you even less likely to give your gums the proper attention they deserve, since it can be painful to care for gingivitis-inflicted gums. It’s important that we do look after our gums though.

You may not know if you’re experiencing gingivitis symptoms or if you just have sensitive gums. The key things to look out for are swollen gums, dark red gums, receding gums (as if they’re pulling away from your teeth), bad breath, and pain.

It is important to treat gingivitis because left unchecked, gingivitis can develop into more serious gum disease and even lead to tooth loss.

What causes gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by poor oral health. If you’re not brushing and flossing enough, it can lead to gingivitis. Plaque-causing bacteria can build up and harm our teeth, gums, and jaw and lead to problems like gingivitis.

The meeting point of your gums and teeth and between the teeth are the most common spawning points for gingivitis.

This doesn’t always come from a lack of care for oral health. A lot of people brush and floss every day, but still develop gingivitis. This can happen because the brushing and flossing might not be thorough enough. If you’re only brushing your teeth and not moving the bristles all the way onto your gums, you could still be at risk of developing early gingivitis symptoms.

How to treat gingivitis

If you notice the early signs of gingivitis, you can catch it and treat it easily.

Flossing is the most effective way to address the plaque that leads to bleeding gums and gingivitis. Flossing is something that a lot of us forget to do when we brush our teeth, especially if we’re in a rush to get out the door, but it’s a vital part of overall oral health. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria that brushing can’t reach.

A tool like the Sonicare Power Flosser could help you floss between all your teeth, especially those harder-to-reach teeth that often get neglected when flossing with string. If you’re having difficulty caring for your whole mouth, you may want to consider upgrading to an electric toothbrush and flosser, if you don’t use specialty tools already.

How to prevent gingivitis and gingivitis symptoms

The best way to prevent gingivitis is by taking thorough care of your whole mouth. Flossing is important, but it’s just one part of the whole. Having an oral hygiene routine that incorporates flossing, brushing and other elements to maintain a whole mouth clean is best.

Switching from a manual toothbrush could be an easy way to keep your gums healthy. Manual toothbrushes aren’t accurate and because they rely on manual movements, they don’t always deliver the same quality of cleaning each time or across the mouth.

You could be brushing your teeth too gently and not removing the plaque, but you could also berushing too aggressively and damaging your gums.

An electric toothbrush like the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean toothbrush could be the solution. The ProtectiveClean toothbrush has a built-in pressure sensor in the handle to guide you as you brush your teeth and help you use just the right amount of pressure.

Electric toothbrushes will often have specially designed, shaped, and arranged bristles that coordinate with the brushes automatic movements to clean your teeth better. Be sure to find the right electric toothbrush for you based on your needs.
