How To Shave Stubborn Body & Facial Hair

Some hairs are stubborn, they just don’t want to be shaven. Neck hairs are particularly bad for this, since they are on an angled surface and finding the direction of hair growth for neck hairs is always difficult. Fortunately, we have a few tips to help you tackle this tricky problem.

One of the most important things to consider when dealing with stubborn hair is the type of hair you have. Thick, wavy hair can be harder to wrangle than straight hair. Curls and waves may be unruly when it comes to the razor, but we all know how great this type of hair looks in a beard. Every beard has its bad hair day, luckily there are some tools and tricks for when they occur.

Step 1: Preparation is Key

If you’re having a tough time shaving your beard, don’t skip out on the essential steps of preparation. Cleansing the hair and skin beforehand will soften the bristles and reduce inflammation. While brushing the hair regularly will stimulate the follicles and draw natural hair oil down the hair shaft, creating an overall healthier beard. Following this regime will make it a lot easier to shave.

Step 2: Trim your Hair before Shaving

It’s possible your hair is too long to be properly trimmed or shaved with an electric shaver or beard trimmer. Longer coarse hair can also damage your shaver by blunting the blade. Grab some beard scissors—not the kitchen scissors but proper beard scissors. Give your hair a bit of a trim with the scissors and then try again with the electric trimmer to see if it’s any easier now.

Step 3: Go with the Flow

If you're not a grooming expert, you might not know which direction of hair growth your beard grows in. This is common, as most beard hair grows in many directions, especially neck hair. A rotary razor is a great tool to combat this, as you can shave with gentle, circular motions and get the hair in all directions.

Step 4: Be Gentle

Always start shaving with gentle pressure, especially in sensitive areas. Pressing the shaver too hard doesn't really help to shave faster. And it can often cause skin irritation because of increased friction between the shaver and your skin. You can also stretch the skin taut to make accessing areas easier and avoid nipping the skin. Use your hand when necessary and tilt your head to stretch the skin when you can.

Step 5: Soften and Hydrate

Nourish and hydrate your skin after shaving to replace the skin’s moisture that’s been stripped away. A face-specific or beard-specific moisturiser or oil is your new best friend. Not only does it soothe the skin after shaving for overall better health for your face, it continues to soften the hair so that next time, stubborn hairs are easier to shave.

Be patient and gentle with your face as you try to get all those stubborn hairs and use appropriate beard products to keep your facial hair healthy.

Stubborn hairs will always give us trouble, but the more we care for our hair and skin, the easier it is to deal with it. You don’t need to be a grooming expert, you don’t even need to know if you have straight or curly hair on your face, you just need to be patient and gentle.
