The hospital is the first in Asia Pacific to fully implement IntelliVue Guardian Solution, serving as a showcase of how automating the healthcare workflow can improve patient safety and outcomes, enable staff efficiency, and ease the tasks of the hospital’s personnel and management team. At the launch, graced by YB A. Ong Mooi Seok, the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, also spoke about transforming healthcare at Bagan Specialist Centre through the automated Early Warning Scoring system.
“Bagan Specialist Centre envisions to be the hospital of choice for affordable value-based quality healthcare in mainland Penang and northern Malaysia. As such, the hospital is always seeking for new ways to improve the quality of its facilities and services. With this implementation, Bagan Specialist Centre can strengthen its ability to better serve more than 300 inpatient beds at the ward block that will be ready by 2019 and the ever-growing medical tourism market in Malaysia,” shared Dr Tan Hui Ling, Chief Executive Officer of Bagan Specialist Centre. With integrated digital technology, the automated EWS system helps the care team recognise changes in a patient’s condition so they can respond earlier, ultimately improving quality of care, patient safety as well as patient experience. Hospitals using this solution around the world have been able to reduce unexpected cardiac arrests, shorten length of hospital stays for their patients, cut down on patient transfers to Critical Care, and free up more time for patient care.
We are very proud to partner Bagan Specialist Centre in rolling out a patient monitoring solution that will help them with patient care in the general ward. Philips is enabling the future of healthcare by providing smart patient care and clinical intelligence where and when it is needed. Our depth of expertise across the health ecosystems and innovative solutions means we can organize healthcare around the patient and help hospitals achieve improved patient outcomes, enhanced patient experience, lower costs and elevated staff satisfaction.

“Having automated tools that provide a comprehensive view into a patient’s condition helps us identify potential patient deterioration earlier, and enhances workflow efficiency by simplifying the medical documentation process and better utilising limited staff resources towards patient-centred care and thus induce a more positive patient experience. The automated EWS system has helped change how our team works by providing them with the information they need at the moment they need it in order to intervene quickly. With immediate access to the patients’ vital signs, we can reduce delays in treatment time which allows our personnel to respond earlier – in enough time to make a difference.” Dr Tan Hui Ling added.
Bagan Specialist Centre’s implementation of patient monitoring and cable-less measurement equipment is equipped with a smart vital signs monitor that helps hospital staff quickly identify changes in a patient’s condition, and respond with timely care. It addresses the challenges that the personnel face in the general ward where they need to take frequent measurements of the patients’ vital signs, within a limited timeframe. Integrated with Guardian, the monitoring and measurement equipment helps the care team not just measure, but also evaluate and document the patients’ vital signs and other observations, eliminating many manual steps and ensuring accuracy of information, thus freeing up more time for patient care. The lightweight, cable-free monitoring solution helps capture critical patient data while allowing them to easily move around without being entangled. Additionally, the implementation of the Philips CareEvent enterprise event management solution complements the new clinical workflow solution at Bagan Specialist Centre. It ensures that changes in a patient’s condition is communicated promptly to the right member of the medical team on their mobile device. This enables the alerts to be assessed quickly and acted on if needed, thus optimising the personnel’s time and allowing them to focus on the sickest patients first for timely care. The system also helps to optimise the skills and specialties of the staff, by automatically allocating the personnel with the right skills where they are most urgently needed.
