Philips Mother & Child Care Solutions deliver "Happiness" at Hanh Phuc International Hospital in Vietnam

July 13, 2011

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – Philips, a leader in Health and Well-being in ASEAN has recently joined the campaign to support the safe delivery and care for babies in Southern Vietnam’s Hanh Phuc “Happiness” International Women & Children Hospital.  The state-of-the art hospital is the first in Vietnam to have a central maternal-fetal monitoring station as well as wireless foetal monitoring solutions from Philips, which provides clinicians with vital information to track patients throughout the labor and delivery period.

With a population rapidly approaching 90 million, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies of South East Asia and demand for quality healthcare has risen steadily.  In 2006, the country had a birthrate of 1.5%, roughly 1.3 million newborns a year, and at the time existing healthcare facilities only accommodated around 15% of need.

In January 2011, the Hanh Phuc Hospital a 258-bed facility with 33 specialist medical suites opened in the province of Binh Duong, just  about 12km from the centre of  Ho Chi Minh City.  The hospital managed by Thomson Medical Centre, a leading healthcare group in Singapore offers a number of services including obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology and pediatrics, breast care, and healthy aging services, general medicine and surgery.

“Our philosophy at Hanh Phuc hospital is “Celebrating life”, and to do this we offer a high standard of clinical quality care and personalized services for our patients and their families,” said Mr. Allan Yeo, Managing Director, Hanh Phuc International Women & Children Hospital. “The Philips solution allows our patients to move around the room and vicinity during labor, increasing their comfort and with the Avalon CTS we able to offer hydrotherapy as the monitoring equipment is water-proof.”

Worldwide, an estimated 13 million babies are born prematurely every year.  About 1 million of those die in the first month.  Clinical care decisions made about the mother and child in the early stages of care will affect families and populations for a lifetime, and Philips is committed to the long-term development of the child.

“Philips is pleased that Hanh Phuc hospital has chosen our FM 20/30, Avalon CTS fetal monitoring system and OBTraceVue clinical decision support tool to offer their patients a new standard in care,” said Vincent Chan, General Manager, Philips Healthcare ASEAN. “By giving clinicians a live view of the fetal heart rate and movement, as well as the mother’s heart rate and uterine activity, care for the next generation of Vietnamese can start before birth.”

Philips has been focused on mother and baby for more than 40 years, having introduced the world’s first commercially available non-invasive fetal monitor in 1968.  Today, Philips Mother and Child Care offers breakthrough imaging and monitoring products, developmentally supportive NICU and PICU solutions, and advanced clinical information systems to help clinicians plan better, work more efficiently, and make more informed clinical decisions. During labor, the OB TraceVue offers a central surveillance system, displaying all traces centrally so that clinicians can react to any adverse events quickly, improving safety. When it’s time for the patient to go home, Philips is there with nursing, feeding, soothing, jaundice management and monitoring solutions to help mothers and babies get off to a healthy start.
