LED in General
Q1. What is LED?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode which are tiny semiconductors encapsulated in plastic that protects the components and helps to focus the light.
Q2. What are the benefits for using LED bulbs?
LEDs provide many advantages over traditional options. The new LED lamps that are being launched today are premium ambient
lights for the home environment that will enable consumers to enhance the décor and ambience of their homes through high
quality lighting. The benefits of LED lights include:
-
High quality vivid light
High quality vivid light with natural shades of white thatgives a soft natural radiance which does not provide glare or heat and thus is gives
comfortable experience on the eyes.
-
Longer lasting
Depending on the model, have a typical lifespan of 20,000 - 25,000 hours. This translates into 20-25 years before replacement is required
(based on an average use of 2,5 hours per day) whilst standard incandescent bulbs typically last for approximately 8 months.
-
Reduced maintenance cost
Very efficient and durable and thus no frequent replacements thereby reducing replacements expenses.
-
More energy efficient
More efficient than incandescent and most halogen light sources, using up to 80% less energy without compromise on performance.
-
Environmentally friendly
Do not contain any lead or mercury. And since they last longer, there is less waste disposal in the environment.
-
Heat Management
An incandescent lamp only manages to convert approximately 8% of the electricity it consumes into light whilst the rest to heat.
With LED lamps, approximately 15-25% of the energy consumed is converted into light. As such, LED produces less heat.
-
Instant Start
Switching on instantly
Q3. Why do LEDs use such little power?
LEDs do not use a filament like that of standard bulbs, where the filament is heated and light is created, which consumes more power than
the light produced. As such, this makes LEDs far more efficient in consumption and output.
Q4. Do LEDs produce heat?
LEDs produce very little amounts of heat. The heat noticed in some instances is due to on-board components and other factors of the circuit.
In comparison to incandescent bulbs, LEDs produce a fraction of the heat. If LEDs are hot to the touch, they are being overpowered due to improper circuitry.
Q5. How long do LEDs last?
LEDs are rated by manufacturers to operate under normal conditions for approximately 10 years or 100,000 hours of continuous use.
As LEDs get older, they tend to dim and fade but aren't susceptible to blinking like incandescent or fluorescents.
LED in Home Environment
Q1. How do Philips LED bulbs help create the home ambience I want at home?
Philips offers new home lighting possibilities with high quality LED bulbs that add ambience and comfort to home interiors created through vivid, natural
shades of white. Its high quality light gives soft radiance without glare, heat emissions or mercury.
These LED bulbs and spot lamps combine excellent performance and contemporary, streamlined styling to make standard light fitting, from table-tops
to chandeliers, they create the kind of lighting that is required for home interiors, be it focused accent, ambient or spot lighting.
Q2. How do I choose between the ambience and decorative led lamps?
The Philips Ambient LED and Decorative LED range provides soft ambience for different lighting requirements for general, accent, wall and decorative lighting.
Philips Ambient LED Soft Glow fits general lighting areas for daily activities, and Ambient LED Focused Beam gives illumination to areas which require highlighting.
The Ambient LED Clear Sparkle is designed to be seen. Its streamlined styling, clear glass and candle shape makes it perfect for chandeliers.
Philips Decorative Accent LED bulb offers soft decorative ambience, giving style and atmosphere to every room in the home with a soft warm-white radiance.
Q3. Are all lamps from the Philips Ambient LED and Accent LED bulbs dimmable? Can they be installed on my existing dimmer system at home?
With the existing product line, Philips Ambient LED Soft Glow is dimmable.
To install just replace your existing lamp with a Philips LED bulb. No re-wiring required.
Q4. Since LEDs are very expensive, should I change to LED bulbs for my home?
Although LED bulbs are currently still more expensive than standard incandescent bulbs, they provide cost-savings in the long run and new lighting possibilities
for your home interior.
To ensure that Philips provides the best quality to our consumers, stringent quality control are in place as each batch of Philips LED lamps goes through
lifespan test.
The LED lamps are also designed with the consumer needs in mind, creating the right aesthetics for the home interiors, while ensuring they last up to 25 times
longer than incandescent bulbs but consuming only a fraction of energy.
They pay for themselves in as little as 18 months and meanwhile, the contribution to the environment starts right away.
Q5. What savings can the Philips LED bulbs offer?
Depending on the model, you can save up to 80% energy costs with LED lamps, than when you use an incandescent or halogen bulb. With the energy and
cost savings you enjoy, these lights can in fact pay for themselves in as little as 18 months. What's more, you are saving the environment by reducing
the amount of CO2 emissions to the environment!
LED Lamps in Use
Q1. Can Philips LED bulbs directly replace the bulbs in the existing light fittings?
They can be directly replaced into existing sockets and in light fittings we find in the homes today.
Q2. Can we recess the LED bulbs into enclosed light fittings?
This is not recommended as the lamps are designed to efficiently move the heat away from the LEDs inside; enclosing or recessing them will interfere with
the luminaries ability to shed heat and shorten the life of the bulb.
Q3. Are your LED lamps for indoor and outdoor use?
These are designed for indoor use only.
Q4. Can I use these lights for reading?
The Philips Ambient LED and Decorative range of premium ambient lighting solutions have been designed specifically to enhance your home interiors.
However, they can also be used together with other functional lights for reading.
Q5. How do I interpret the wattage indication on the packaging?
Using the example of Philips 2W Ambient LED Clear Sparkle, it will provide the light output of a standard 10W lamp. Similarly, a 6W Ambient LED Soft Glow
will give a light output equivalent to a 30W standard lamp.
